Attractive locations

Wat Ek Phnom

Ruins of an 11th-century Khmer temple beside a modern pagoda, with carved lintels and a large seated Buddha. A quiet rural site north of the city.

Wat Banan

Hilltop temple of five sandstone towers, reached by a long staircase. The climb is rewarded with views over rice fields and the countryside.

Phnom Sampeau Killing Caves

Hillside caves used for killings during the Khmer Rouge years, now a memorial with a shrine. The hill is also known for a vast colony of bats that stream out at dusk.

Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary

Protected wetland on Tonle Sap lake, reached by boat from the floating village. It shelters large colonies of waterbirds, including storks and pelicans, especially in the dry season.

Laang Spean

Cave site in the hills near Banan where archaeologists found traces of people who lived there thousands of years ago. It is a quiet stop that fits well with a visit to Wat Banan.
