Attractive locations

Catalina Island

Small island off the southern coast with white sand and clear water. Boat trips stop here for swimming and snorkelling, and divers visit the reefs nearby.

Saona Island

Large island in the east with palm-lined beaches and shallow, turquoise water. Day trips by boat from the coast often stop at a natural pool where starfish rest in the sand.

Cotubanamá National Park

Protected area on the southeast coast, also called Parque Nacional del Este, with dry forest, caves and coastline. Birds and other wildlife live here, and Saona Island is part of it.

Cuevas de las Maravillas

Limestone caves reached by a short guided walk, with stalactites and stalagmites and rock drawings from the Taíno people. Lighting and walkways make the tour easy to follow.

Altos de Chavón

Hillside replica of a Mediterranean artists' village overlooking the Chavón river, with cobbled lanes, a stone church and a large open-air amphitheatre. Galleries and workshops make it a pleasant walk.

Bayahibe

Small fishing town and beach on the south-east coast, and the starting point for boat trips to Saona and Catalina islands. Its waterfront has calm water and simple restaurants.
