Attractive locations

Taj Mahal

White marble mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal beside the Yamuna River. Its dome, minarets, gardens and long reflecting pool make it one of the best-known buildings anywhere.

Agra Fort

Red sandstone fort on the Yamuna, the main residence of Mughal rulers for generations. Inside are palaces, audience halls and mosques, and the Taj Mahal can be seen from some terraces.

Akbar's Tomb

Large tomb of the emperor Akbar at Sikandra, approached through a tall red sandstone gateway inlaid with marble. Wide lawns and arcaded walkways surround the mausoleum.

Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah

Delicate marble tomb on the east bank of the Yamuna, sometimes called the Baby Taj. Its inlaid stonework and carved screens influenced later Mughal tombs.

Mehtab Bagh

Garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, laid out so the mausoleum is seen straight across the river. It is a calm spot, especially around sunset.

Jama Masjid, Agra

Large 17th-century mosque built by Jahanara Begum, daughter of Shah Jahan, near the fort. It is an active place of worship, so modest dress is expected.

Chini Ka Rauza

Mughal-era tomb of a Persian poet and minister, noted for the glazed tile decoration that once covered its walls. It sits quietly on the bank of the Yamuna north of the Taj.

Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani

Tomb of Mariam-uz-Zamani, a wife of Emperor Akbar and mother of Jahangir, built in red sandstone near Sikandra. It is a quieter Mughal monument away from the main routes.

Keetham Lake (Sur Sarovar)

Wetland lake with a bird sanctuary, a short drive from the city. Many waterfowl and migratory birds can be seen here, especially in winter.

Guru ka Tal

Sikh pilgrimage site and gurdwara in Agra, associated with the ninth Sikh guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. It centres on a large water tank and is open to respectful visitors of all faiths.

Fatehpur Sikri

Red sandstone city built by Emperor Akbar in the late 1500s and abandoned soon after. Palaces, courtyards and the huge Buland Darwaza gate stand in a walled complex outside Agra.

Keoladeo National Park

Wetland sanctuary near Bharatpur with lakes, marsh and woodland, famed for migratory birds in winter. Visitors explore by bicycle, rickshaw or on foot with guides.

Getting around

From Agra airport

Kheria airport lies about 13 kilometres from Agra, and the district administration advises hiring a taxi from the airport. No metro, city bus, general taxi or prepaid taxi service is listed for the airport on the Airports Authority of India's Agra page. The district page calls Kheria a seasonal commercial airport that also serves as a military base.

Agra stations and Taj area

Agra Cantt is the main one of the city's five railway stations, and the two main bus terminals are Idgah Bus Stand in the centre and the ISBT. For the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, the district site mentions pre-paid taxis, auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws from Agra Cantt. Polluting vehicles may not come within 500 metres of the monument, the Taj Mahal site says, and battery buses run from the parking areas.
