Costs

Prices here are about 33% of US prices (World Bank, 2025). This compares a country's overall prices, not the cost of a trip.

Practical information

Entry

Your passport decides which visa rules apply; the official site below should be checked. Before booking, the official e-Visa site and the official visa-free list are the places to look, or a Kyrgyz embassy can be asked. Bring along an onward ticket and a passport that is valid for 6 months. Within a few days after arriving, foreign visitors normally register; hotels do this on your behalf, so keep the slip.

Culture and travel - take note

A strong nomad tradition runs through the country, which is Muslim-majority but relaxed. In a yurt, shoes come off and the threshold must not be stepped on; the fermented mare's milk (kymyz), tea and bread should be accepted, at least as a small taste. A nod, along with a handshake (men), is how people greet. Weather in the mountains changes fast, summers are short, and in winter the high passes are closed. Off the main routes the roads are rough, so a licensed guide or a driver should be hired for horse rides and treks. Altitude can cause sickness near the high passes and around Song-Kol. A permit is needed for some border areas, so ask your operator. Outside Bishkek, carry cash (som). Halal food is common.

Good to know

Som, cash and ATMs

Canadian advice names the som as the currency and describes the economy as mainly cash-based. Cash machines are limited in rural areas. Credit card, internet and cash machine fraud is common, so the advice suggests using machines in well-lit public places or inside a bank or business, covering the keypad when typing a PIN, checking statements and avoiding large sums of cash.

Local laws and customs

ID checks, alcohol and photography

UK advice says visitors must carry their passport or a notarised copy at all times, and Canadian advice notes that police regularly check ID. Drinking in public is banned, and drug convictions can bring long prison terms. Photos or drones near military, security, border or police sites are illegal, as are vaping products. Same-sex relationships are legal, the UK advice says, though public affection could draw unwanted attention.

Taxis and scams

Marked metered taxis

Taxis with official markings and meters, or a trusted ride-sharing app, are what Canadian advice recommends, while shared taxis and street taxis are to be avoided; before leaving popular restaurants, it also suggests arranging a reputable taxi service in advance. UK advice likewise says to avoid flagging taxis, use licensed pre-ordered services, and consider private cars or pre-arranged taxis at night.

Fake police and airport greeters

At airports, fake meet-and-greet facilitators have lured travellers into cars and then asked for money, Canadian advice says. It also reports thieves posing as police officers asking foreign travellers to pay alleged fines; the suggested reply is to offer to go to the nearest police station. UK advice is not to pay cash directly to police officers.
