Attractive locations

Jemaa el-Fnaa

The main square of the old city, an open space that fills with food stalls, storytellers, musicians and crowds as the day goes on. It is the best-known meeting point in the medina.

Koutoubia Mosque

A 12th-century mosque whose tall minaret stands over the medina and serves as a landmark for finding your way. Non-Muslims cannot go inside, but the grounds and gardens around it are open.

Bahia Palace

A 19th-century palace with painted wooden ceilings, tiled courtyards and shaded gardens. Walking its many rooms gives a clear picture of how wealthy families lived in Morocco.

Majorelle Garden

A garden of cacti, bamboo and palms set around a bright blue villa, created by the painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent. A calm break from the medina.

Saadian Tombs

A royal burial ground from the 16th century, with finely carved cedar and plaster ceilings and tiled mausoleums set among garden graves. It stayed hidden for centuries before being rediscovered in the 20th century.

El Badi Palace

The ruins of a vast 16th-century palace, with a large sunken courtyard and pools. Storks nest on the high walls, and the roof terraces give views over the medina.

Ben Youssef Madrasa

A former Islamic college in the medina, famous for its carved cedar, plaster and tilework around a central courtyard. Small student rooms line the upper floor.
