Official government travel advice

Advice changes quickly. Check it before you travel and again before you leave.

Costs

Prices here are about 28% of US prices (World Bank, 2025). This compares a country's overall prices, not the cost of a trip.

Practical information

Entry

Passports decide the visa position, so see the official site below and get confirmation from a Tajik embassy before booking. For the Pamir region (GBAO), a special permit is also needed; the e-Visa system can add it, and it should be requested even by travellers who are otherwise visa-free. Carry a return ticket and a passport with 6 months of validity.

Culture and travel - take note

This mostly Muslim country is very hospitable. Cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off at homes, and expect endless tea and bread (bread must never be placed upside down). Remote yet spectacular, the Pamir Highway has rough roads, scarce fuel and cash machines, patchy phone signal, and altitude that can cause sickness. Choose a reputable driver or operator to travel with, and bring enough warm clothes, water and cash. Unsafe conditions are possible in areas near the Afghan border; governments advise caution, so consult your own government's travel advice. Military or government sites, bridges and border posts must not be photographed. Only bottled water should be drunk. Halal food is widespread.

Emergency

112. Older numbers still used: fire 01, police 02, ambulance 03 - confirm with your hotel or driver.

Good to know

Mostly cash, few cards

UK advice says Tajikistan is mainly cash-only, with very few businesses taking credit cards and no acceptance of travellers' cheques. Cash machines are growing in Dushanbe and larger towns, are absent in rural areas, and mostly accept only Visa. Bring enough cash for the whole stay, or withdraw in Dushanbe first. Change money only at authorised exchanges; US dollars are easiest, and booths may refuse damaged notes.

Local laws and customs

ID, photography and online posts

UK advice says to carry a passport or notarised copy at all times, as police can arrest people without ID. Photographing or flying drones near military or security sites, including border checkpoints and police stations, is illegal, and drones need permission from the national security committee. Smoking on the street is illegal and finable, and online posts showing disrespect to religion, culture or national symbols can bring fines or prison. UK advice says same-sex activity is not illegal but attitudes are conservative.

Taxis and scams

Licensed and unlicensed taxis

Both licensed and unlicensed taxis operate in Tajikistan and are hard to distinguish, and drivers do not always use meters, says Canadian advice. It suggests booking through hotel reception, skipping unmarked taxis and confirming the fare beforehand, and notes that drivers of shared marshrutkas may overcharge. UK advice is to take licensed taxis and to steer clear of a taxi that already has someone in it.

Airport payment requests

At Dushanbe International Airport, people have been asked to pay for supposedly incorrect documentation or other offences, UK advice reports; it suggests having your hotel check your documents beforehand. The same advice recommends using only officially authorised currency exchanges to change money.
