Practical information

Entry

Only eligible nationalities can use ESTA, the visa waiver, so the right route depends on the passport. Among people unable to use it, most require the B-1/B-2 visitor visa: the DS-160 form is completed online, the fee for the visa is paid, and an interview takes place at a consulate or embassy of the US (waivers of the interview have become rare), with exceptions listed on the State Department's page. Waiting times for appointments can be long, so apply early. The 'visa integrity fee' is new, having been passed into law in 2025; the State Department's official site says if and in what way it applies to an application. Entry is not guaranteed by a visa, because the border officer makes that decision, and how long a stay is allowed appears on the I-94 record. Stick to official .gov sites, and never pay anyone offering to 'guarantee' a visa.

Culture and practical - take note

Treat tips as part of what you pay, because servers rely on them: about 15-20% is usual in restaurants, while taxi drivers, hotel porters and housekeepers get a few dollars. Sales tax is not included in shelf prices and gets added when paying at the till. Alcohol may legally be drunk only from age 21, open alcohol in public places or in cars is illegal, and most indoor places ban smoking. Americans are direct and friendly. On manners, stay at a polite distance, make small talk, arrive on time and say 'thank you' and 'please'. Fines apply for speeding, jaywalking and driving with no licence, and wearing a seat belt is mandatory. Healthcare costs a great deal, so buy travel insurance that has strong medical cover. Phones and bags may be inspected by US border officers. Big cities have halal food available. Winter storms, extreme heat, wildfires and hurricanes are natural hazards that differ from one region to another and with the season, so consult the weather service.

Emergency

911 for police, fire and ambulance.

Good to know

Dollars, cheques and cash machines

The currency is the US dollar. Canadian advice says most banking transactions require a US bank account, and that card and cash machine fraud, including card cloning, occurs; it suggests using machines in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business. Large sums of cash or similar assets carried into or out of the country must be declared to US Customs and Border Protection.

Local laws and customs

Federal law, alcohol and cannabis

UK advice says visitors are subject to both state and federal law, and breaking either can put visa status and future travel at risk; carry a passport showing permission to be in the country. The national legal age to buy and drink alcohol is 21. Illegal drugs, cannabis included, carry severe penalties, and Canadian advice notes cannabis remains illegal under federal law even where some states allow it.

Taxis and scams

Card fraud and highway ploys

Canada's travel advice reports debit card cloning and other fraud involving cards and ATMs in the United States, so watch how others handle your card and choose well-lit or staffed ATMs. A highway ploy near airports and tourist destinations is also described: someone points out a problem with your vehicle and grabs valuables once you stop. Use hazard lights and drive slowly to a busy place such as a gas station or police station. UK advice adds that gangs may single out vehicles driven by people who look like tourists.
